In March 2013, Leicester City clinical commissioning group made money available to fund local ideas to prevent or treat lung disease. The CCG invested £80,000 into the project, the first of its kind for a CCG.
They wanted to prevent or treat COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, commonly known as lung disease; an incurable long term condition and one of the most common reasons why people in Leicester die early. Preventing the disease or supporting those who already have it, were, therefore key priorities for Leicester City CCG.
The purpose of Health in your hands was to encourage community groups to come forward with ideas that can help people with lung disease to prevent and manage their condition as well as educate others in the community.
After choosing the most viable bids, Leicester CCG held a public voting event at the Peepul Centre in Leicester. There were 16 successful groups awarded cash amounts between £500 and £5000. All the groups have now delivered their schemes and projects within their community.
